ipCD – Respiratory - Respiratory Anatomy and Pulmonary Ventilation

Benjamin Cummings. InterActive Physiology® 8-System Suite CD-ROM, Benjamin Cummings, 2004.

Objective:

To explain in short essays or diagrams how the airways, lungs, pleura and muscles of respiration cause breathing and how changes in airway resistance and lung compliance affect breathing, at the level of 85% proficiency for each student.

In order to achieve this objective, you will need to be able to:

  1. Describe the major organs of the respiratory system and the function of the pleura.
  2. Describe the structures of the bronchial tree and alveoli.
  3. Explain how changes in the volume of the thoracic cavity lead to air movement in the bronchial tree.
  4. Describe the role of the muscles used during breathing.
  5. Describe factors which influence airway resistance and lung compliance and explain how these will affect breathing.
