ipCD – Nervous - Neuron Anatomy and Ion Channels

Benjamin Cummings. InterActive Physiology® 8-System Suite CD-ROM, Benjamin Cummings, 2004.

Objective:

To describe in a short essay or with diagrams the major features of neurons, the structural basis for communication between neurons and the role of ion channels, at the level of 85% proficiency for each student.

In order to achieve this objective, you will need to be able to:

  1. Describe the basic anatomical features of neurons and the function of dendrites, cell body and axon.
  2. Explain information flow in neurons and the structural basis for communication between neurons.
  3. Describe the types and functions of ion channels and their locations.
  4. Explain how ion channels function in the resting membrane potential, synaptic potential, and the generation and propagation of the action potential.
