ipCD – Muscle - Muscle Metabolism, Contraction of Motor Units and Whole Muscle

Benjamin Cummings. InterActive Physiology® 8-System Suite CD-ROM, Benjamin Cummings, 2004.

Objective:

To describe in short essays or diagrams the sources of energy in different types of muscle cells and to explain how motor neurons, motor units and muscle stretch affect the development of muscle tension, at the level of 85% proficiency for each student.

In order to achieve this objective, you will need to be able to:

  1. Describe the cellular processes for synthesis of ATP; compare and contrast aerobic and anaerobic processes.
  2. Explain differences in ATP synthesis among different muscle cells.
  3. Describe the organization of a motor unit and the role of motor neurons.
  4. Describe the relationship of motor unit size and precision of movement.
  5. Explain the role of frequency and strength of stimulation and the recruitment of motor units in generating muscle tension.
  6. Describe the effect of muscle stretch on the development of tension in a muscle.
