chemCD – Water

Thornton, R. M. The Chemistry of Life, Biology Version, 2/E CD ROM, Benjamin Cummings, 2003.

Objective:

To explain in a short essay the chemical properties of water, the solubility of various substances in water, and the concept of molarity and how to make a solution, at the level of 85% proficiency for each student.

In order to achieve this objective, you will need to be able to:

  1. Define the structure of water and explain the polarity of water.
  2. Define hydrogen bonding and to explain cohesion (surface tension) and adhesion of water.
  3. Describe the behavior of polar, non-polar, and amphipathic molecules in water; and to explain how this relates to the dissolving process.
  4. Explain how water is a source of atoms for chemical reactions.
  5. Explain why water has a high specific heat; and to explain why a high specific heat in important in the body.
  6. Explain the concept of molarity; and to explain how to make a solution.
