Objective:
To explain in a short essay the
chemical properties of water, the solubility of various substances in water,
and the concept of molarity and how to make a solution, at the level of 85%
proficiency for each student.
In order to achieve this objective, you will need to be able
to:
- Define the structure of water and explain the polarity of
water.
- Define hydrogen bonding and to explain cohesion (surface
tension) and adhesion of water.
- Describe the behavior of polar, non-polar, and amphipathic
molecules in water; and to explain how this relates to the dissolving
process.
- Explain how water is a source of atoms for chemical
reactions.
- Explain why water has a high specific heat; and to explain
why a high specific heat in important in the body.
- Explain the concept of molarity; and to explain how to
make a solution.
