Thornton, R. M. The Chemistry of Life, Biology Version, 2/E CD ROM, Benjamin
Cummings, 2003.
Objective:
To describe in a short essay or
with diagrams the major features, roles and construction of proteins in the
body, at the level of 85% proficiency for each student.
In order to achieve this objective, you will need to be able
to:
- Describe the general structure of amino acids and
proteins.
- Describe how a free amino acid differs from an amino acid
residue; and to describe how water reacts with a free amino acid. **
- Describe hydration synthesis and the formation of proteins
from amino acids.
- Distinguish between and describe primary, secondary,
tertiary, and quaternary levels of protein structures.
- Explain how water, pH, temperature, and disulfide bridges
contribute to the shape of a protein.
