Objective:

To describe in a short essay or with diagrams the major features, roles and construction of proteins in the body, at the level of 85% proficiency for each student.

 

In order to achieve this objective, you will need to be able to:

  1. Describe the general structure of amino acids and proteins.
  2. Describe how a free amino acid differs from an amino acid residue; and to describe how water reacts with a free amino acid. **
  3. Describe hydration synthesis and the formation of proteins from amino acids.
  4. Distinguish between and describe primary, secondary, tertiary, and quaternary levels of protein structures.
  5. Explain how water, pH, temperature, and disulfide bridges contribute to the shape of a protein.
