chemCD – Lipids

Thornton, R. M. The Chemistry of Life, Biology Version, 2/E CD ROM, Benjamin Cummings, 2003.

Objective:

To describe in a short essay or with diagrams the major features, roles and construction of lipids in the body, at the level of 85% proficiency for each student.

In order to achieve this objective, you will need to be able to:

  1. Describe the general structure of fats; and the difference between saturated and unsaturated fats.
  2. Explain why fats are not water soluble and thus are hard to transport in the body.
  3. Describe the hydrolysis process that breaks down fats.
  4. Describe the general structure and functions of phospholipids and steroids.
  5. Explain why the phospholipid bilayer limits transport through membranes.
